Many people know about smudging, but there are other ways to keep the space around you positive and most importantly protect you against negative energy. First, let’s discuss why it’s important to have positive energy around you. Clearing the air of negative energy allows you to be centered and mindful. In other words, it helps you to be in the present and “let go” of the negativity that might be binding you. Below are some simple practices to leave the negative behind and embrace the positive.

Smudging. This is probably the most common practice of clearing negative energy in your home, around your body and objects. Many people buy a bundle of dry white sage and light it. Once the flame goes out, a beautiful smoke arises from the bundle which you swirl around the room, you, the object, etc. If you don’t like the smell, try sweet grass. Tribal Trade says it reduces over 94% of harmful airborne bacteria in a room! They also mention that it helps with mood, clarity and awareness. It’s recommended that you sage yourself once a day.

Crystals. Crystals help with protection. Healthline says that obsidian is for protection against physical and emotional negativity. Jasper is known to protect you from and absorb negative vibes. Black tourmaline, one of my favorites to wear while practicing tarot card readings, grounds negative energy. Clear quartz attracts positivity while black jade helps you avoid negativity. You can wear these crystals as necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, etc. or you can place them in your home, car, or anywhere else where you feel you need protection.

Essential oils. Base Formula, a UK website, recommends the following essential oils to dispel negative energy: Lemongrass, Cypress, Frankincense, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Lemon Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Peppermint, and Sweet Orange. You can find incense sticks to light or perhaps candles that have the essential oils within them. You can also purchase the essential oils and put a few drops in your bath or in an essential oil burner or defuser. Keep in mind that there are a few essential oils that do cause harm to pets.

Gratitude jar or journal. I think this is one of the simplest ways and very powerful. Find a jar and every day, write on a piece of paper something that you are grateful for and drop it into the jar. You can also journal 5 to 10 things that you are thankful for. There’s always something you can find that you are grateful for. Then pause, take a deep breath, and be grateful for yourself. You are the greatest gift to the world. Always remember that.
