Looking at Life Through the Lens of Patterning
By Julie Matheson

As a healing arts practitioner who is focused on helping clients deeply change patterns of behavior they wish they didn’t have, I find myself often looking at life through the lens of patterning.  I’m always saying things like, “Hmmm, I wonder what is behind that thinking? Or inquiring, “What past events is that behavior rooted in?” Or, “When do you first remember this issue being a problem?” Or, “How, and in what conditions, does that pattern most often seem to get activated?”

It’s kind of like being a detective or a historian or both of these mixed together. Except that I am a detective rooting through emotions, and a historian dredging up memories.  And my motive or intention is similar perhaps, in that I am trying to solve a problem and make it go away.

This work is called Clearing Work or Energy Healing Work because beliefs, thoughts and feelings are energy and they become energetic patterns that work as a system of energy.  Have you ever felt seduced by your own patterning whereby you behaved in a way that took you totally by surprise?  Who hasn’t?  Think of binge eating or over-spending or over-reacting? But really anything can be cleared as a pattern, any issue, as long as you can tap into the repeating energy of it. Any health issue can be addressed as a pattern, as well.

Whenever I sit down to work on a pattern, whether with myself, or with a client, I often remind them, and myself “We have no idea what we are going to discover here today.” There is no way, at the onset of pattern clearing work, to know what lies at the roots of certain behaviors until we dive in. We can’t know, and so we might as well just be interested and allow ourselves to be surprised.

And then miraculously, as we dig in and stay with the process, so much more happens than just discovery work.  We do actually begin to clear out the issue. And by clear out, I mean change and reorganize the energy of the pattern.  Things remarkably start to add up and make sense. Your whole brain, both sides – your logical thinking mind and your creative, intuitive mind – start to work together on a common goal they both care about, solving the issue at hand.  Your mind and heart also start working together, usually kicking in your compassion and understanding. So often we sit there saying, “Oh wow, no wonder, I totally get why I do this or that.  I see now why this always seems to happen this way.”

As possible as it is to change patterns deeply, patterns can be tricky. You have to be ready to do the work. It’s not for the faint of heart. But pattern clearing is perfectly suited for the soulful, spiritual seeker who came here to get the job done once and for all.

I recently finished writing a book about the process that I use to clear patterns. I was careful to include everything I thought readers would need to know to clear patterns on their own. As I thought about the title for my book, I wanted to include the word “patterns,” – since that’s what my book is actually about.  Yet, friends warned against using this word.  They thought people wouldn’t know what I mean by “patterns”.

So I did some “research” to test out this concern.  I said, “Hey, Universe! Do my potential readers know what the word pattern means?!!!”  Then, I waited and paid attention.

Next thing I know, I’m in a health food store and one isle over a man is talking to another man about a session with his therapist. The topic was his PATTERN with the type of women he typically dates.

On another occasion, I’m at a café and at the table next to me one friend is telling another that she has a PATTERN of attracting mean bosses.

This kept happening. And of course, I already knew that my clients know what the word pattern means but does someone who doesn’t know me, and who might be interested in learning how to clear patterns themselves - do they know?  They do, as it turns out. So here’s the title:
