The Cost of Never Disappointing Anyone
by Rose Gebran

She notices the mood in the room before anyone says a word.
Someone shifts in their chair. A comment lands wrong.
She steps in fast. Changes the subject. Makes it lighter.

Later that night, she replays it.
Did I say too much?
Did I make it awkward?
Is everyone okay?

She’s the dependable one.
The calm one.
The strong one.

She says yes when she’s tired.
She explains herself so no one misunderstands her.
She carries the weight so no one else has to.

People call it kindness.

But her body calls it something else.

Tight shoulders.
A clenched jaw.
A nervous system that never fully rests.

Somewhere along the way, she learned that love meant being easy. Being helpful. Being the one who keeps the peace. So she became very good at reading the room and managing other people’s feelings.

She just stopped checking in with her own.

Here’s the quiet truth:
If you never disappoint anyone, you are probably disappointing yourself.
Every swallowed no.
Every forced smile.
Every time she makes herself smaller so someone else feels comfortable.

It adds up.

Exhaustion isn’t always from doing too much. Sometimes it’s from being too many versions of yourself.

The moment she sets a boundary, someone may not like it. The moment she says no, someone may feel uncomfortable. But discomfort does not mean she did something wrong.

It might mean she chose herself.

Here’s one simple thing to try:
Before you say yes, pause. Take one slow breath. Notice what your body does. Does it soften? Or does it tighten?

Your body tells the truth before your mind does.

You don’t have to crash and burn to change. You can pause now. You can listen now.

When we slow down and bring awareness back to the body, we begin guiding it back into attunement — back into balance, safety, and clarity.

If this feels familiar, you are not broken. Your body learned how to survive. It can learn something new.
