As I sit here nursing a cold—something I haven’t experienced in more than five years—I find myself trying to choose a title for this article. The words are written, but what is it really saying?
Am I a Superhero World Saver…
or am I learning the art of self-love?
Wait…what??? Saving the world and loving ourselves are connected?
In my world of superhero world-saving, we talk a lot about loving ourselves. It sounds nice. Wise. Maybe even a little cliché. But here’s the simple, uncomfortable truth: you cannot save this beautifully chaotic world until you learn to save yourself. And you cannot save yourself until you can actually love yourself. And here’s the kicker—you can’t truly love yourself until you get to know yourself.
Not the polished, acceptable, “I’ve got it all together” version. The real you. The quiet, longing, wildly powerful, sometimes messy truth of you.
I recently realized that the deepest part of me wants nothing more than freedom. Not surface-level freedom, but soul-level, breath-deep, fully-expressed freedom. And yet, I’ve spent much of my life carefully staying inside boxes—some designed by society, some by family, and many enforced by my own inner governor.
This governor and I go way back. We’ve traveled lifetimes together, keeping things orderly, responsible, controlled, and “appropriate.” But something is different now. This lifetime feels like the one where the furniture gets rearranged. The one where we gently—but firmly—step out of the molds we once squeezed our unbelievably powerful selves into.
This is the lifetime where we tend first to our innermost desires, our truth, our energy… so that when we step into the world, we do so as whole beings rather than exhausted fragments.
For so long, many of us have served from a crippled state—giving our diminished energy in the name of being the good Wizard, the devoted Way-Shower, the tireless Healer, the loving Spiritual Guide, the ever-present Mother. We gave because that’s what good people do. We give and give and give.
But when no one teaches us to tend to ourselves first, the well slowly runs dry. We keep pouring from a cup that was never refilled, wondering why the magic feels harder to access and the joy feels thinner than it once did.
