Reversing Brain Fog, Dementia, and Alzheimer’s pt. 2
by David DeHaas
As I mentioned last month, it’s alarming that I am not aware of any Memory Care Facility in our area that promotes reversing memory loss. In fact, Memory Care often seems more like a comfortable warehouse where people continue to lose their memory and eventually pass away.
Research over the last decade indicates that memory can be regained. This is at the forefront of my research, especially since I’ve personally experienced significant memory issues in the past that I have now reversed and now I have a family member with dementia.
I have regained my memory, and Martha has shown signs of improvement in a relatively short time.
For conditions like brain fog, we’ve seen reversals in days, particularly among those who attend our 10-day Healing Retreat. The transverse colon plays a crucial role as it houses many brain connections. Old, decaying fecal matter can hinder the neurons in your gut from firing and wiring connections to the brain. After several colonics, our clients often report dramatic improvements.
Diet is crucial, and recent studies show that getting your body into ketosis through a ketogenic diet can be about 50% responsible for memory improvement. Cheap carbohydrates like bread, pasta, cereals, processed foods, sodas, cakes, and cookies are essentially “carmalizing” your brain. I’ve stocked Martha’s refrigerator in her assisted living center with ketone-friendly snacks like mackerel and cottage cheese mixed with a “ranch” style dressing. She uses this as a dip for celery and other vegetables, which is not only tasty and filling but also supports regular bowel movements. Martha also receives regular colonics.
To track your blood sugar levels, get a Blood Glucose and Ketone monitor; they are very affordable, costing less than $100. I began tracking my levels years ago and was shocked by how high my blood sugar was.
Exercise is vital, particularly creative forms of exercise. I have Martha walking and tossing a ball, which requires focusing on two tasks simultaneously, aiding in rewiring brain neuro pathways. She also walks backwards for part of her daily one-mile walk. While walking, I challenge her brain with questions like, “What year were you born?” “What are the names of your children?” “Spell their names,” and then, “Spell their names backwards” or “Spell their names with your tongue on the roof of your mouth.”
After implementing just a few of these strategies, she woke up one morning and called to tell me she could recall the names of the towns in the county where she once lived and had begun reading again. Big wins!
